Help New Immigrants

What sacrifice are you willing to make?

Recently I [Alice] met an elderly German woman who left a great impression on me. Osie had asked GOD to help her save enough money out of her pension to bring 12 Russian immigrants to Israel. In order to save money, she ate only rice and noodles (no meat, fruit, or vegetables) until she had enough for their tickets. In her German accent she said, "GOD is so good! When I gave the money to the organization they told me that I had enough for 36 Jews to come to Israel! I was so excited! I have certificates showing that I brought them here," she said with great joy. (She didn't say which organization she had given money to.)

Feeling very guilty about my selfishness I decided I would give up my (occasional) strawberry, banana smoothie and my favorite cereal to save money to bring immigrants to Israel. Well, it just didn’t work! I convinced myself that in getting the smoothie I was actually helping the young pregnant mother who had just opened her own little store. As far as the cereal was concerned I did with out for about a week but then reminded myself that GOD had said I was to eat right; the cereal really is nutritious (I think). Anyway, when the Osie came back to visit me she said she felt badly that she was not nearly as dedicated as I was. She said, "You gave up your home, family and everything to follow GOD; I still have my own little place to live in Germany."

"Osie, I can’t copy you and you can’t copy me. We each have to do what GOD leads us to do. Besides, I have children and grandchildren I can stay with back in the States. You don’t have anyone so just be thankful GOD has provided a place for you."

My purpose in telling you this is that you will seek the LORD as to what He would have you do. King David said, "I will not offer to the LORD that which cost me nothing." Of course the greatest sacrifice is to, "offer ourselves to GOD which is our reasonable service" (Romans 12:1).
